To a lot of us, the summer is a time to enjoy life, to let loose and show off our hard work! I live in Boston now and I’m such a summer baby, I have to really take advantage of the time I can spend outdoors while it lasts and that’s exactly what I did this Memorial Day.
After following a rigid program all spring while training for my bikini competitions at Fitness America and Fitness Atlantic, it’s all about maintaining!!! So let it be known, most of my “lifestyle” blogs from here until September are going to be geared toward enjoying a healthy lifestyle, but maintaining my lean physique while indulging in life’s temptations.
Friday evening marked the start of the long weekend when Ryan and I went to a local tapas bar. I’m a huge fan of tapas – I hate committing to one thing and one thing only for dinner, especially when there’s so many delicious options on the menu. Plus, you don’t always have to walk away stuffed if you order a few tapas at a time. I really like to order 2 or 3 things, split those then order a couple more items and see how I feel. You usually end up consuming a lot less food that way, and you get to try so many different things. Either, way, my stomach was a bit upset because a lot of what we ordered was fried. This was the beginning of the decline…
Saturday morning I got in an amazing circuit training and HIIT workout. Lots of sprints, burpees, walking planks, SLDL’s, etc. I was sweating my ass off!! Saturday was actually really uneventful for me because the sun wasn’t out so I just took the day to get a lot of random stuff done. You know, those things that pile up mentally or physically (or both) that aren’t really pressing, but you need to do… All the while Ryan and his bff Jim built a beach in our backyard!
For dinner we grilled steak I marinated in my amazing steak rub and enjoyed it with delicious corn on the cob! I needed a healthy dinner and a good night’s sleep because I had randomly decided to run a half marathon the next day!!!!
Sooooo abou that… the Run to Remember half marathon has always been on my mental to-do list. I had considered it last year but wussed out. This year I wasn’t certain how I would do because since the Disney Princess Half in Feb, the furthest I had run was about 4 miles, but I still felt compelled to do it. I had a couple friends doing the 5 miles as well as the half. I was already signed up for the 5 miler, but I needed to pick up one more number anyway, so I could easily switch. The weather was expected to be perfect - 65 degrees, a little humid and sunny. To me, that is PERFECT weather to run 13 miles. I had been going back and forth for about a week and finally in front of about 9 clients I just spit it out “I”m running a half marathon this weekend,” because I wanted to set an example. At that point I had to follow through.
Sunday morning I took off on the 13 mile journey. The route is amazing as it goes all through downtown Boston, into Cambridge where you run along the river and through Harvard, then back into downtown Boston. It was such a beautiful day, I just enjoyed all 2:25:01 of it. I wanted to beat my best half marathon time which was 2:27 which I beat, but I wasn’t trying to race it or live up to some certain pace, I mean I didn’t train for it! Check out my quick video updates…
As though the race wasn’t awesome enough, Sunday we had a ton of friends over to enjoy our pool and beach and grilled and played beer pong all afternoon!!! This is where I should teach you guys all about how you can still eat healthy at a BBQ, but instead I’ll tell you if you want to learn about that then you should read this blog. Because my friends, I did not even have a single intention in the world to behave for the rest of my day. I mean, hello…. I had just run 13.1 miles!!!!!! It was my time to celebrate and I did just that with lots of sangria and Bud Light. Actually, come to think of it, all I had to eat was some pita chips with hummus, a bratwurst (no bun) with mustard, two bites of potato salad and a few flaxseed tortilla chips with mango chutney. I just made sure to put carbs back into my body via beer. hahaha.. We all have weaknesses, right?
Judge all you want – some of you like to cheat with hamburgers.. some of you like to treat yourselves to ice cream.. I like to treat myself to some ice cold Bud Light in the back yard with my friends – it’s my FAVORITE thing in the world.. I’m never going to give that up!!!!!
Monday I woke up and immediately began chugging water. For breakfast I ate the regular: oatmeal with PB2, flaxseed and berries and 2 eggs with 1/3 cup whites, spinach and mushrooms. A hangover is NO excuse to get back on track immediately. If you allow that to be an excuse then when will you get back on track? Get over it. Get up and do something – I took my dog for a walk and mopped my floor and by 11am I was perfectly fine!
Sure I spent the rest of Monday watching Ryan and Jim have a few beers, but I knew if I drank a few with them it would just prolong the yucky feeling of being bloated. So I stuck with water and healthy snacks like chicken with leftover sauerkraut on a whole wheat wrap and buffalo hummus and carrots. And later that day I went to a BBQ and enjoyed extra turkey tips to make sure I was really full before the desserts came out. Of course I am physically incapable of passing up a brownie or a chocolate chip cookie, but since I’m really consistent with my workouts and my clean eating, those small treats aren’t going to ruin me!!!!
Now it’s Tuesday and I’ve gotten in a workout and a yoga session (gotta get the legs moving and stretched so they recover from the Run to Remember half marathon) and I’m back on track 100% baby!!!!!
Tell me about your Memorial Day Weekend. What did you do for your health? How did you indulge? Was it worth it?
