This week I traveled to Florida for the Disney Princess Half Marathon and to visit my best friend in Palm Beach, FL. Getting ready for the trip was exhausting because I had lots of work to take care of, pedicures, hair and tanning appointments, clients to train, bags to pack and food to cook.
Upon arrival I rented a car to head straight to Twin Power Yoga on Clematis Street in West Palm (review to come.) After class I went to Publix (the best grocery store in the world!) to pick up some supplies to add to what I had already packed. Since I was staying with a friend I picked up things to eat like eggs, spinach, SF redbull, dressing and lots of water.
While staying in Jupiter I got in some awesome workouts. I ran along the water on Jupiter Island…
I practiced yoga at Twin Power Yoga and I got in a shoulders/ arms lift sesh on Friday, but wanted to take it pretty easy leading up to the race.
My best friend and I had a couple of really awesome dinners out that included pecan and sweet potato crusted grouper, plantains and sea bass with green beans. I love fish and it’s so healthy and lite. Grouper is one of my favorites and for some reason I have a hard time finding it outside of Florida so I always get it when I can.
We also spent the night out on the town in downtown West Palm with some friends but called it an early night since I was leaving Saturday morning for a long day of driving to Orlando, checking into our hotel, picking up race numbers and going to dinner.
Once we got to Orlando all of the princesses were together – Princess Gina, Princess Theresa, Princess Amy, Princess Kim, Princess Juli and Princess Kyra. It had been a very long day for all of the Princesses so we tried to get through dinner as quickly as possible, but it was still a late night with a dreadfully early morning ahead of us. See, Disney wants you on a bus by 4am from your hotel. But the elite runners start at 545am. So Princess Theresa, Princess Juli and I risked being eaten by alligators and walked to the race start. It allowed us an extra hour of sleep, so we got to “sleep in” until 415am and got to our Corrals by 530am. We only had to stand in the cold for about 20 minutes before our corral started.
I was really nervous a few days before the race. Honestly, running is not my forte. I didn’t train specifically for this half marathon. I probably ran about once a week on average, with 6 miles being my longest run. However, I did go to CATZ on Saturday mornings for an hour, then ride the spin bike there for about 45 minutes after, so my body was at least conditioned for endurance cardiovascular activity. I just don’t enjoy running in the cold so I’m not going to force myself to be miserable.
Princess Theresa, Princess Juli and I stayed together the entire race. It was great to have someone to chat with when things were boring or if you felt tired or broken. We all kept each other thinking positively. But for the most part, this race is so fun you smile about 95% of the time. It’s 20,000 women (almost) dressed up as freaking princesses!!!! There were too many tutus and tiaras to count. Fairy dust and pastels were every which way you looked – even on the guys who ran!!!
You get to run through the Magic Kingdom and Cinderella’s castle, Epcot and at every mile there is some kind of entertainment like all of the Princes dancing and posing to “I Need a Hero,” or men dressed up in tuxes with glass slippers asking you to marry them. So you really don’t have any time to get bored. Check out my videos:
Mile 5: In the Magic Kingdom
Mile 10 Check In
Mile 12: In Epcot
I finished in 2:28:56, exactly 1 Minute longer than last year. But whatever – I had such a good time!!! It’s such a fun race, it’s an awesome experience to share with friends and I can’t wait to do it next year!
We spent the rest of the day going around the world at Epcot with Princess Gina’s sister. Now I’m back in Boston and it’s hard to believe, but I’m not even sore and I’m ready to go squat tonight and get rid of this water weight before the Arnold this weekend!!!
